Pig Types

Cleaning Pigs

are used to remove accumulated solids and debris from the internal walls of pipelines these pigs cover a wide range of configurations  and styles. Typically wire brush pigs either with foam body or steel body ( mandrel ) pig are used which have wire brushes to scrape the internal walls of the pipe to remove the solids. Mandrel 14” and smaller pigs use circular wire brushes and larger pigs have wire brushes mounted on either leaf , cantilevered or coil springs which maintain pressure against the internal walls of the pipe.
Polyurethane blades are used in place of steel brushes where soft deposits like paraffin or mud are to be removed.
Bypass ports are used in conjunction with  blade and brush pigs with ports installed in the nose or on the body. The ports control fluid bypass and assist with cleaning of brushes and keeping debris in suspension in front of the pig as well as regulating the bypass.
The Sealing discs and cups are usually made from a high tear and abrasion resistant Polyurethane  which provides a combination of sealing and cleaning to remove soft deposits.

Tracking Pigs

are used for either finding a stuck pig or for just monitoring the pig passage along the pipeline. A transmitter is installed in a purpose built  pig which has a removable lid over a cavity normally to the rear of the pig where the transmitter sits and emits a signal either eloctro-magnetic or sound (Pinger )

Gauging Pigs

are used to check ovality of pipeline and or for a protuberance in the pipeline, this is commonly done after construction of a pipeline. Gauging plates are made of either aluminium or steel and mounted on the front or rear of the pig. They may be slotted or solid and have an outside diameter of 90-95% of the inside diameter of the pipeline.

Batching Pigs

are used to separate unlike products such as different grades of petrol and petroleum products and liquid based food products. Solid polyurethane pigs  in either industrial grade polyurethane or food grade polyurethane are widely used for their ability to form a reliable seal and  be multiple run  and easily cleaned.

Proving Pigs

are essentially Foam Pigs used to prove a pig will pass through a pipeline. They are  made from open cell polyurethane foam  usually in light density foam but also available in medium and heavy density foam. ( see Polly  Pigs)

Dual Diameter Pigs

are used for as it suggests dual diameter pipelines typically varying 2 pipe sizes, example -  24”and 26” etc  Foam pigs can be used in this application because of their ability to compress however a common type is the mandrel pig which is fitted with solid polyurethane discs for the smaller diameter and slotted discs for the larger diameter pipeline section.
